<< Back

Typically, B.Tech (Civil Engineering) is a four year course, minimum eligibility for which is an intermediate (10+2) with subjects such as physics, maths and chemistry. Civil Engineering focuses on planning, designing, and supervising the construction of facilities required for modern life. The students of civil engineering study planning, designing and supervising of various facilities.

CIVIL ENGINEERING is the application of science and technology to the planning, design, analysis, construction, operation and maintenance of the physical facilities required by society. Considered as one of the oldest engineering disciplines, civil engineering involves planning, designing and executing structural works. The profession deals with a wide variety of engineering tasks including designing , supervision and construction activities of public work like roads, bridges , tunnels , buildings , airports , dams , water works , sewage systems ports etc. and offers a multitude of challenging career opportunities. Civil engineers are the fabricators of our modern society and the protectors of the quality of the environment. They deal with people and their management materials and their use, designs and their application, and the problems of beneficially interweaving these factors to serve society. Civil engineering has a long history and a bright future because it serves the basic needs of society.

To meet these requirements of the country, the department of civil engineering would be focusing on technologies pertraning to structural engineering, transportation engineering, geotechnical engineering, hydraulic engineering, geometric engineering and environmental engineering.

Career Opportunities

Civil Engineering graduates with a B.Tech degree have varied options. The first is employment with high technology consulting firms, local, or state government, contractors or construction firms, public utilities or industrial corporations. A second option is graduate studies to pursue an area of specialty within civil engineering. Such studies open up more advanced employment options in government , consulting, construction or industry, and introduce new options including research and teaching. A civil engineering degree also provides a good background for professional training in law, business administration or medicine.

Civil engineers are employed in all major construction projects carried out by the state and central government, the railways, private construction companies, military, engineering services, consultancy services etc. Civil engineers graduates can also open their own consultancy services. A civil engineering degree also provides a good background for professional training in all the above listed six field of specialization of civil engineering.

A lot of infrastructural development is going on in India. According to an estimate 70,000 civil engineers are required per annum while the country at present is producing about 11,000 per annum. Thus, there is an acute storage of civil engineers in the country. There is also a high demand for experienced civil engineers in developed countries.
