Typically, B.Tech. is for four years, minimum eligibility for which is an intermediate (10 + 2) in science. Subjects usually studied under this degree are Production Technology, Environmental Science and Engineering, Applied Thermodynamics, Fluid Mechanics and Machinery, Mechanics of Machines, Fuels and Lubricants, Automotive Diesel engines, Automotive Engine Components, Automotive Electrical systems, Automotive Transmission, Automotive Materials and Metallurgy, Automotive pollution and control, Manufacturing Processes, Quality Control and Reliability Engineering etc.

Modern Automobile Engineering is a branch of vehicle engineering, incorporating elements of mechanical, electrical, electronic, software and safety engineering as applied to the design, manufacture and operation of motorcycles, automobiles, buses and trucks and their respective engineering subsystems.

Automobile engineers are involved in almost every aspect of designing cars and trucks, from the initial concepts right through to manufacturing them.

Broadly speaking, automotive engineers are separated into three main streams: product engineering, development engineering and manufacturing engineering.

Product engineer (also called design engineer), that would design components/systems (i.e. brake engineer and battery engineer). This engineer designs and tests a part, seeing that it meets all its requirements(i.e. the shock), performs as required, material meets desired durability and so on.

The department would be focusing on efficient design alternate/ multifueled vehicles, hybrid and pollution free vehicles.

Career Opportunities

Automobile industry is witnessing a very high growth rate. With many new projects, Indian companies are entering the global arena. This has led to more and more jobs in the industry. One has to specialize in automobile engineering to enter the industry.

Some of the major Laboratories are

» Material Science Lab
» Fluid Mechanics Lab
» Manufacturing Science Lab
» Applied Thermodynamics Lab
» Internal Combustion Engine Lab
» Dynamics of Machine Lab
» Heat Transfer Lab
